Family, Friends & UPHILL TRAVEL!!

I know, I know
I haven't written anything in a while.
It's not that I haven't thought about what to write
Or haven't been skiing...
It's just, well,
I've had some things to work out
That were just too personal
And I couldn't put thoughts into words
And the skiing...
Well,
I needed the skiing to be mine.
And not yours.

And I have been skiing.
Today will be 55.
I haven't been pushing,
But almost waiting.
Not searching for days,
Just letting the days find me.

It's a different kind of feeling,
Not pushing for days.
Not jumping up at 4:30am to make another day happen
Instead i've been skiing with Vespi
And Family and Friends.

It's an old kind of skiing,
Which would make my dad proud
Where it's not about the how fast
And who's first to the bottom
It's about passing on traditions
And keeping the family love of skiing strong.
To the next generation of female ski bums,
Who are laughing hysterically as we ski along.

It's about our favorite ski song,
"Bibbity Boppity Boo"
Creeping into my head
as I share the rhythm with my 4-year old cousin

It's about pulling a whirly bird
To the beat of a Beach Boys tune
As I strive to impress my 8-year old cousin

It's about being able
to turn to the person next to you
And say:
"Hey Bestest Ski Buddy!!"
"I love Skiing with You!!"

And it is about skiing
A Skiing that is the oldest Skiing of all time.

The uphill kind.

Where your turns are earned by walking.
Where you can schuss the up as well as the down.
It's you and the mountain.
All her glory and her pride.

And about having your friends right there,
By your side.

With my Sister & my Friends
(so they can see what I see)

With my boyfriend.
(so we can sneak a kiss or two on the way up)

With ANYONE!
(so you too can share in the crazy!!)

No more sneaking around.
No more ducking behind bushes
And hiding in the trees.

Cause Killington has made it LEGAL
to go uphill
whenever I damn well please.

May You Find the Spirit of the Mountains Within You,
Merisa & Vespi

  1. Oh Marisa, reading your stories make me happy. This one especially really resonates with me. It also makes me happy that these uphill passes exist, it is a big deal to all the people out there willing to earn their turns!
